Donna Howell-Sickles (b. 1949) was raised on a ranch in north Texas. While attending Texas Tech in Lubbock, where she earned her BAF, she was struck by a postcard from the 1930s depicting a woman on a horse wearing bright red lipstick. The charm and confidence of the woman was her initial inspiration for her "cowgirl art".
